MARTIN CITY, JR., TO PERFORM THIS SUMMER AT THE 15TH NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL
Martin City, Jr., the children’s theater arm of the Martin City Melodrama & Vaudeville Company was recently selected to perform August 12th through August 28th in New York City at the 15th annual New York International Fringe Festival. Hundreds of companies from all over the world submit original shows to the New York International Fringe Festival in hopes of being chosen to participate. Only three children’s theatres from around the world were picked, and Martin City, Jr., is one of the three! This will be the second time Martin City, Jr., has appeared at the Festival, having appeared in 2006 at the 10th annual New York International Fringe Festival with the smash children’s theater hit “HARRIET HOPPERDOODLE’S HAIR-BRAINED HISTORY TEST!”©. Martin City, Jr., is the only professional theatre company in the Kansas City metro area to have been selected to perform in this prestigious theatre festival.
This year’s production chosen to perform in the Big Apple is one of Martin City, Jr.’s most popular productions “AN OLD WOMAN WHO SWALLOWED A FLY AND OTHER HEROINES THAT REACH FOR THE SKY!”© Written by Artistic Director Jeanne Beechwood with original music by Musical Director Jon Copeland, this original musical for children pays tribute to she-roes (and heroes) of long lost folk and fairy tales from around the world. Performing in New York City will be Martin City, Jr., company members Jeanne Beechwood, Kattie Post, Mark Maasen, and Cassandra Beechwood-Hall. Elizabeth McManus will serve as company stage manager, and Dan Hall is the official company representative to the Festival.
Melodrama Artistic Director Jeanne Beechwood is thrilled to perform in New York again in the company of her fellow fringers from around the world. “The spirit and excitement of being around theatre artists from so many different places and countries who create original works is really the adventure of a lifetime, and we have been lucky enough to participate in the New York International Fringe Festival twice! As New York International Fringe Festival alumni, we shall continue our on-going mission to be the “on the fringe” children’s theatre in our nation’s heartland.”
Martin City, Jr., also offers The Komedy Kidstitute™ consisting of theatre workshops, after-school classes, summer camps and special needs theatre classes for the next generation of vaudevillians! Martin City, Jr.’s parent, the Martin City Melodrama & Vaudeville Co., creates original melodramas and vaudevilles and also recreates historically significant entertainment through its forgotten American musical series.
This fall, the Melodrama kicks off its 27th season of family entertainment with “Mother Goose’s Christmas Crimes!”© and another original vaudeville revue featuring the world famous Water Glass Symphony. For now, Martin City, Jr., continues to perform its most recent original musical, “AN ITSY BITSY SPIDER WHO CHANGED THE WORLD!” © through Aug. 2nd, 2011, at its theatre space in Metcalf South Shopping Center in Overland Park, Kansas.
